Own the Cone

There are several reasons why it is important to get up to the NV Line. Maybe the most important point of all is best expressed by the simple geometry of a cone.

Notice how for every step back away from the NV Line you have opened up a significantly greater piece of real estate for your opponent's shot. In those cases you are forced out of an easy volley and into a far more challenging return. Even if you can make the return your opponent has accomplished their goal of forcing you off-balance and opening up the court for their next shot.

Staying up close allows you to minimize paddle movement and maximize return effectiveness. And you do it all with your ready position intact and your opponents' rhythm disrupted.
